Can Interior Design Be Taught
Like many things in life that are creative, there are people out there that have a natural knack for picking it up, but it is also one that can be learned through some time and effort.
Here are some tips we suggest if you’re wanting to dive into learning interior design without having to dive into school or a degree.
1. Practice on Your Own Home
The best place is to start in your own home! Start by seeing colors and patterns you like to mix together. See how you like to layout a room by moving around your furniture, and see how things flow well together. If you’ve spent enough time in your own space? Try out helping a friend or sibling with their home. You can get the experience of getting a new perspective and giving some design advice.
2. Use Free Resources
There are so many free ways to learn these days! The best way to learn is by watching someone else or getting their advice and perspective on how they do things. We love learning new design skills on Skillshare, Youtube, and even watching shows on home channels like HGTV. They go in depth into a variety of interior design areas like commercial design, residential work and DIY.
3. Get Familiar With the Industry
This goes back to watching those who already have years of experience. You can really get behind the scenes so easily by following some designers you like on Instagram, seeing what they’re pinning on Pinterest and watching their Youtube channel. There are so many designers out there right now that are so willing to share their process, tips, tricks and what they’ve learned from their experiences. Take advantage of the opportunities and also see the network and connections formed within the industry.
These are just a few simple steps that can get you started in the right direction, but at the end of the day follow what you’re drawn too and continue to learn more about the niches of design you love. It’s going to strengthen your skill set you can offer and put you in a design space that could turn out to be your dream job. If you ever have any questions, feel free to reach out to us as well! We personally have multiple opportunities to follow along on our design processes and even intern and get hands on experience in the industry.
Happy Designing!
